Senior Medical Typist

It’s very exciting when you become a senior medical typist! You have more responsibility, as a senior medical typist has the choice of either sending their transcription file straight to their client or sending it to quality assurance with a query. If sent to quality assurance, they will resolve the query and then send it to the client.

In addition, there are more opportunities for career growth once you have progressed as a senior medical typist. Usually, this is working in quality assurance, as a mentor, or both!

Working in quality assurance is a stepping stone for any senior medical typist. You are responsible for working with interns, junior and other senior typists, to check the files they have raised with a query. You would then find the information required to resolve it and provide feedback.

Mentors are another great opportunity for senior medical typists. They are paired with an intern, taking them through what has to be done when they first start out. When working as a mentor, you would be responsible for checking the intern’s work until their accuracy is up to a level where they can be promoted to a junior medical typist.

Team Leader Medical Typist

Back when you have completed your induction, you are allocated to a team, which is managed by your team leader. In your team, there will be a mix of junior and senior typists.

As a team leader, you would be responsible for allocating workloads, managing any issues, doing quality assurance and mentoring as well.  You would also run weekly team meetings and liaise with other team leaders.

How does it work?

When we open a letter from a doctor or read a medical report, there is a very high chance that a medical transcriptionist (MT) has transcribed it. Medical transcriptionists listen to an audio of a doctor recording notes from a patient consultation and then converting this audio file into a written report. These reports are then added to the patient’s medical record.

Being able to understand what the doctor has recorded, correctly type that information, and identify any errors, is very important, as this will reduce the chances that patients will get the wrong treatments.  Therefore, a medical transcriptionist provides quality healthcare and ensures these reports are consistently accurate.

Doctor dictates

To begin, the doctor will record notes from a patient consultation, as a voice recording, which will come through as an audio file.

Whether you choose to work from home as an independent contractor, or for yourself under a personal business, you will need an Australian Business Number (ABN). An ABN is an 11 digit number used to identify your business.

Applying for an ABN is quick and easy. More importantly, it’s free! You can apply for an ABN by visiting https://abr.gov.au/ and you usually receive it within 24 hours.

You won’t have to register with a business name if you don’t have one yet. Instead, you can just register as a ‘Sole Trader’. There is no need to apply for GST either.

Step 2: Make a list

The next thing you need to do before creating your home office is to make a list of the equipment you will need. By writing all of this down before setting up your home office, you will avoid missing any of the essentials.

Step 3: Choose a designated area

The idea of working from home in your pyjamas can sound very appealing. However, it is important to keep your work life and home life completely separate. This is because the brain usually identifies certain spaces with certain tasks. Ideally, your home office should be an area that is far away from your bedroom, as this will help your brain identify your home office with work, which will increase your productivity.

Step 4: Invest in technology

Having the right technology is vital for any home office. As you will be working online, it’s very important to make sure you have a good internet connection.
