Career Opportunities in Medical Transcription

When you think about medical transcription as a career, there’s not a lot of everyday experience to go off.

Because we don’t usually see or hear a medical transcriptionist (MT) working at a local hospital or medical clinic – the role of an MT is often misunderstood. Interestingly however, when we open a letter from a doctor, or read a medical report, there is a very high chance that a professional MT has transcribed it.

With more than twenty-three million people in Australia all requiring some level of healthcare, the medical records and documentation industry is certainly in-demand.

If you’re thinking about pursuing a career in medical transcription, you need to keep in mind that there are typically three main career pathways available:

I’ve been in the MT industry for almost 5 years. This is not to discourage, but for those who plans to start a career in MT and is looking for training, get those that guarantees a job after graduation. It will be really tough for you to find a job alone, these days. Medical transcription has obviously changed a lot in the previous years. Now, many companies use voice recognition instead and MTs are just editing the files causing a reduction on their pay, sometimes as low as 3 cents per line.

    • TalentMed 14/07/2015 at 10:56 AM

Hi Jennifer, thank you for your comment – It’s great to hear that you have a background in Medical Transcription. Medical Transcription has certainly evolved with technology recently and now allows MTs to take on more of an editing role. Instead of MTs transcribing every word of the doctor’s dictations, they play an important role in ensuring that the transcription is accurate by editing the reports. Critical thinking is a unique human ability that cannot be imitated by voice recognition technology and it is for this reason that MTs remain an important part of the Medical Industry. At TalentMed we provide job assistance for our graduates, with over 98% being placed in jobs after graduation. As we are the only accredited training provider in the country that specialises in Medical Transcription, we are the first place that top companies look to recruit. Entry-level, work-from-home MTs are generally paid on production and can choose their own hours anywhere between 10 to 40+ hours a week. I hope this information helps and please feel free to contact us on 1300 737 781 with any questions. Thanks!

    • TalentMed 14/07/2015 at 10:09 AM

Hi Andrea, thank you for your comment. It’s great to hear that you’ve had so much experience in the MT industry. As we are a training organisation, we help our graduates find work after completing the course with over 98% of our graduates being placed in MT jobs. Hi
I replied to a recent advert wanting medical typists to work from home (I an not living in Australia). I have been typing medical documents for over 5 years. I sat the test and failed – something I did not expect. I would love the opportunity to work from home but now have to wait 6 months to resit the test. Is that correct? I cannot afford to pay for the 6-month TalentMed course.

If MT’s are paid by the quantity of work they output rather than the hours they put in, does it matter if they are not fast at typing? Can they still find regular work anyway? I’ve never been a fast typist but usually have few problems understanding scientific and/or medical terminology. I left school in Yr 11 nearly 30 years ago but have continued to enjoy reading a wide variety of science and technology articles all my adult life.

    Hi,

I live in South Africa. I am looking for part time job online to supplement my income. Will I be able to do the course and then work as an online MT for Australia companies, even though I don’t live there? How flexible is the work can I pick an choose my hours? You say on the website you can pay back the tuition within 3 months. Is that working 40 hours a week or more? Would the diploma be recognized in USA or the United kingdom as well?
