Reasonable Adjustment Policy

Adjustments we can make to help you learn and be assessed fairly.

Purpose

This policy sets out how TalentMed makes reasonable adjustments for students with disability, so you can access and complete your training on an equal basis with other students. It applies to every TalentMed course and every student who has a disability as defined in the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (Cth).

Our commitments

We comply with the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, and we meet Standard 2.4 of the Standards for RTOs 2025. That means:

  • We support you to disclose a disability if you choose to.
  • We make reasonable adjustments where appropriate so that you can participate on the same basis as other students.
  • If we cannot make a particular adjustment, we explain why in writing, and we work with you on alternatives.

Reasonable adjustment does not mean lowering the standard of the qualification. Adjustments change how you learn or are assessed, not what you need to demonstrate to be assessed as competent.

Who this applies to

“Disability” here follows the definition in the Disability Discrimination Act and includes:

  • Physical disabilities, chronic illness, and long-term injury
  • Sensory impairments, including vision and hearing
  • Intellectual, learning, neurological, and neurodivergent conditions
  • Mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress
  • Temporary disabilities (for example, during recovery from surgery)

You do not need a formal diagnosis to ask about adjustments. Let us know what is happening and what would help, and we will work through it with you.

Disclosure is your choice

You are never required to disclose a disability. If you choose to, we treat that information as confidential and only share it internally with staff who need to know in order to put the adjustment in place. Disclosure does not affect your eligibility to enrol, your assessment results, or your qualification.

The way we handle disability information is set out in our Privacy Policy.

Examples of adjustments we can make

Adjustments are always tailored to you. Common examples include:

Study and learning materials

  • Materials in alternative formats such as large print, audio, or accessible PDF
  • Extra time to complete units or modules
  • Flexible scheduling and pacing within the course
  • Captioned or transcribed video content
  • Adjustments to our learning platform to work with assistive technology (screen readers, voice input, magnification)

Assessments

  • Extended time for timed assessments
  • Rest breaks during longer assessments
  • Alternative assessment formats where the evidence can still meet the rules of evidence
  • Split assessments across multiple sessions
  • Use of assistive technology

Communication and support

  • Flexible communication channels with our student support team
  • Written summaries of verbal conversations
  • Extra check-ins around key deadlines

These are examples, not a fixed menu. If something else would help, tell us.

What we cannot adjust

Some things are essential to the qualification and cannot be changed without changing what the qualification certifies. These are called inherent requirements. Typical examples include:

  • The competencies, skills, and knowledge the training product requires
  • The rules of evidence: your evidence must still be valid, sufficient, authentic, and current
  • Regulatory requirements for licensed or regulated outcomes (none of our current courses lead to a licensed outcome)

We can change how you demonstrate a competency, but we cannot change the competency itself.

How to request an adjustment

You can request an adjustment at any stage, before enrolment, at the start of your course, or later if your circumstances change.

  1. Tell us. Email support@talentmed.edu.au or call 1300 737 781. Describe what is affecting your study and the adjustment you think would help. Supporting documentation (for example, a letter from a treating practitioner) is helpful but not always essential.
  2. We discuss options with you. We aim to respond within five business days. We will ask questions to understand your needs, explain what we can and cannot do, and agree the specific adjustment in writing.
  3. Adjustments are documented in your student record. If they affect assessment, we update the assessment plan. You receive a copy.
  4. We review them together. We check in with you partway through the course to make sure the adjustments are working. You can request changes at any time.

If we cannot accommodate a request

Sometimes a requested adjustment is not possible. That might be because it would change an inherent requirement of the course, would cause unjustifiable hardship, or would compromise the integrity of assessment.

If that happens, we will:

  • Explain the reasons to you in writing
  • Work with you on alternative adjustments
  • Discuss whether a different course or pathway might suit you better
  • Tell you how to appeal the decision, through our complaints and appeals process

Harassment, victimisation, and cultural safety

We do not tolerate discrimination, harassment, or victimisation related to disability. If you experience this, from staff or from another student, please tell us through our complaints and appeals process.

Our Diversity and Inclusion Policy sets out our broader commitment to a safe and inclusive learning environment.

Privacy

Disability and adjustment information is treated as sensitive information. We store it securely, share it only with staff who need to know, and retain it in accordance with our retention schedule. Full detail in the Privacy Policy.
