Practice your touch typing with our Touch Typing Test!

A touch typing test is a great way to see how fast you can type! In fact, there is no limit on the number of times you can do a touch typing test. Therefore, you can do them regularly to increase your speed and improve your accuracy.

Typing is an important skill for anyone using a computer, especially for medical transcriptionists! Also, the faster you can type means the more productive you will be.

Although, if you’re not too sure what a touch typing test involves or how you can use it to improve your typing, we have explained this for you below!

What does a Touch Typing Test involve?

Some of us may not know what our typing speed is! Therefore, you may want to take a touch typing test or even a typing game to see how fast you can type.

When doing a touch typing test, you will have one minute to type out a set of words. In addition, after you complete the touch typing test, you will receive some statistics, which we have broken down:

Words/minute (WPM)

This refers to the number of correctly typed words. However, both short and long words have the same value. Therefore, this is a more basic metric used for a touch typing test.

Characters/minutes (CPM)

How many characters you’re able to type per minute. When doing a touch typing test, the length of a word affects your WPM, as it’s easier to score well typing shorter words. Therefore, the number of characters you can type in one minute is also measured, as it is more reliable. For example, even though you may have an 80+ WMP metric from typing in a lot of short words, you may get the same CPM as a person with 60 WPM who is typing longer words.

Accuracy

This takes into consideration how many errors you have made. When you make a mistake in a touch typing test, this will reduce your score. Similarly, accuracy is important when being a medical transcriptionist, as you need to be able to produce letters and reports that are grammatically and punctually correct.

What is a good touch typing test score?

You might be thinking how you compare on the typing speed scale. After you have done your touch typing test, this is an indication of where you might be sitting:

  •  35-40 WPM is how fast an average person can type.
  •  60-75 WMP puts you above average.
  •  90 WPM + you have a very fast typing speed, and may be a touch typist!

How can I improve my typing skills?

Typing speed is something where there are no shortcuts – you just have to keep practising your typing. For this reason, doing a touch typing test every day will help you reach your goal.

Also, there is some muscle memory involved with finger placement when using the keyboard, especially if touch typing is your goal. Therefore, allocating 15-20 minutes of practise per day will help you improve, even if it’s just focusing on keyboard positioning. Ensure that you take it at a slow pace, as well as focus on improving your accuracy first, as your speed with naturally improve the more you practise!

Check your Typing Speed with our Free Typing Test!

A free typing test is a great way to see how fast you can type! In fact, there is no limit on the number of times you can do an free typing test. Therefore, you can do them regularly to increase your speed and improve your accuracy.

Typing is an important skill for anyone using a computer, especially for medical transcriptionists! Also, the faster you can type means the more productive you will be.

Although, if you’re not too sure what an free typing test involves or how you can use it to improve your typing, we have explained this for you below!

What does a Free Typing Test involve?

Some of us may not know what our typing speed is! Therefore, you may want to take a free typing test or even a typing game to see how fast you can type.

When doing a free typing test, you will have one minute to type out a set of words. In addition, after you complete the free typing test, you will receive some statistics, which we have broken down:

Words/minute (WPM)

This refers to the number of correctly typed words. However, both short and long words have the same value. Therefore, this is a more basic metric used for an free typing test.

Characters/minutes (CPM)

How many characters you’re able to type per minute. When doing a free typing test, the length of a word affects your WPM, as it’s easier to score well typing shorter words. Therefore, the number of characters you can type in one minute is also measured, as it is more reliable. For example, even though you may have an 80+ WMP metric from typing in a lot of short words, you may get the same CPM as a person with 60 WPM who is typing longer words.

Accuracy

This takes into consideration how many errors you have made. When you make a mistake in a free typing test, this will reduce your score. Similarly, accuracy is important when being a medical transcriptionist, as you need to be able to produce letters and reports that are grammatically and punctually correct.

What is a good free typing test score?

You might be thinking how you compare on the typing speed scale. After you have done your free typing test, this is an indication of where you might be sitting:

  •  35-40 WPM is how fast an average person can type.
  •  60-75 WMP puts you above average.
  •  90 WPM + you have a very fast typing speed, and may be a touch typist!

How can I improve my typing skills?

Typing speed is something where there are no shortcuts – you just have to keep practising your typing. For this reason, doing a free typing test every day will help you reach your goal.

Also, there is some muscle memory involved with finger placement when using the keyboard, especially if touch typing is your goal. Therefore, allocating 15-20 minutes of practise per day will help you improve, even if it’s just focusing on keyboard positioning. Ensure that you take it at a slow pace, as well as focus on improving your accuracy first, as your speed with naturally improve the more you practise!
