When I enrolled in the Diploma of Clinical Coding, I was looking for a career change after many years of nursing. By about nine months into the course, I was absolutely certain clinical coding was the career I wanted to pursue, so I started actively looking for employment in the area.

I contacted tertiary hospitals in my area and applied for Health Information positions as a way of getting my foot in the door and gaining exposure to the profession. During that time, I sat a 60-minute clinical coding pre-employment test. The first time I attempted it, I was only completing module 1 of the diploma and, unsurprisingly, I did not perform well. Rather than being discouraged, I used the experience as motivation to keep learning. When I sat the test again about three-quarters of the way through the diploma, I nailed it. That result led to a successful interview and ultimately a full-time trainee clinical coder position.

The course itself is exceptionally well organised. The platform provides extensive practice using real (deidentified) medical records and clinical coding scenarios, which helps bridge the gap between theory and real-world coding. There are plenty of assessments throughout the course, and the trainers provide prompt, constructive feedback so you can quickly understand where you went wrong while the material is still fresh in your mind.

As a visual and practical learner, I found the learning videos invaluable. They explained concepts clearly and made some of the more challenging topics much easier to understand. The timeframes for completing the course are realistic, but there is no doubt that success requires commitment and consistent study. There is a considerable amount of work involved, and you need to be prepared to allocate the necessary time. However, if you are willing to make that commitment, you will gain an enormous amount from the course.

One of the things I appreciated most was that the assessments are completed progressively throughout the course rather than relying on one large, intimidating examination at the end. This style of learning brought out the best in me, reinforced my understanding as I progressed and helped build my confidence with each body system.

By the time you complete the diploma, you will have developed a sound understanding of clinical coding, but you will by no means be an expert. Clinical coding is a profession in which knowledge and confidence continue to develop through supervised workplace experience. For this reason, I specifically pursued a trainee coding role where I could continue learning with the support of experienced clinical coders.

These trainee opportunities may not always be advertised using the words “trainee clinical coder.” I found that making direct enquiries with the Health Information Services departments at tertiary hospitals was a valuable way to learn about possible training pathways and positions. I would encourage prospective coders to be proactive, introduce themselves and ask hospitals directly what opportunities may be available.

If you enjoy medical terminology, analysing clinical documentation and working through medical stories and complex coding scenarios, you will find this course both challenging and incredibly rewarding. It is a highly practical program that provides a strong foundation for entering the clinical coding profession. I am genuinely thrilled with my new career as a clinical coder. I am incredibly grateful for the knowledge, skills and confidence TalentMed has enabled me to achieve.

Overall, I had a positive learning experience with TalentMed Healthcare Education. The trainers and support team are friendly, supportive, and responsive. A special thank you to my trainer, Raisa, who always listened to my questions, provided constructive feedback, and genuinely supported my learning throughout the course.

One area for improvement is access to the learning materials. It would be very helpful if students could download, print, highlight, or make notes on the resources, especially for those studying multiple courses or wanting to keep the materials for future reference.

Finally, I did it! To be honest, this course is not related to my profession, but because of someone’s encouragement, I decided to enroll. Little did I know that it would become one of the most challenging and rewarding learning experiences I’ve ever had. This achievement is a reminder for me that stepping outside of your comfort zone can lead to unexpected growth and accomplishment. Here’s to continuous learning, embracing new challenges, and never being afraid to try something different.

In this course, every episode presented a unique story that required analyzing details, locating sources, assigning classifications, and verifying facts. It was a journey that tested my patience, critical thinking, and attention to detail. At times it felt overwhelming, but it also made the learning process incredibly engaging and meaningful.

Very good course that sets you up for a great start to Clinical Coding

This is the excellent course. The content was extremely practical and clearly organised. Also the key points made it much easier for me to understand and apply the material.
