In Australian hospitals the role is called clinical coding, and the nationally recognised qualification is the HLT50321 Diploma of Clinical Coding. There is no separate “medical billing and coding” credential here the way there is in the United States. In the United States, “medical billing and coding” is often a single combined course, because the same person frequently codes the record and submits the insurance claim. Australia works differently.

Here, the two jobs are separate:

• Clinical coding is the hospital-based classification work, learned through the HLT50321 Diploma of Clinical Coding.
• Medical billing sits on the practice-administration side (Medicare, private health funds, practice management) and is a different skill set entirely.

So there is no single “medical billing and coding” qualification in Australia. If your interest is the coding work, the Diploma of Clinical Coding is the course. If your interest is the billing and practice-administration side, that belongs to practice management rather than clinical coding.

The recognised qualification: HLT50321 Diploma of Clinical Coding

When Australian employers advertise coder roles, they ask for the qualification by name. The HLT50321 Diploma of Clinical Coding is the nationally recognised qualification for the role, listed on the National Register at training.gov.au and delivered by Registered Training Organisations including TalentMed (RTO 22151).

Can I study medical coding online in Australia?
