I have just finished the Diploma of Healthcare Documentation. I have been working in the medical industry for quite a long time, so felt that Medical Transcription was a natural path to move into. I have found the staff wonderful and always there to help if needed. While it seems like there are a lot of audio files to transcribe, by the time you get to the end it feels like second nature. Thanks to all the staff for your help.

I am a recent graduate of the Diploma of Healthcare Documentation course, and my experience has been fantastic. I would like to thank both Kylee and Lauren for their great advice and support during this time.

I had planned to finish the course within the year, but I was diagnosed with breast cancer, so I had to extend my time studying. Studying did help me take my mind off cancer and its effects, but I persevered through and finished it to much amazement.

I am now looking forward to expanding my career as a Medical Transcriptionist (MT) and increasing my skills and knowledge by applying for MT positions.

Thanks again to TalentMed.

I have recently completed my Diploma of Healthcare Documentation through TalentMed and found it to be a highly rewarding course that has set me up with the ample skills and knowledge to begin a career in medical transcription. Kylee and Lauren were extremely efficient and helpful in answering any questions I had as well as providing me with feedback to improve my work. Since completing my studies I have already been able to apply for transcription positions and am really looking forward to being able to use the knowledge I have gained in a real-world setting. Overall, I really enjoyed this course and want to thank Kylee, Lauren and the whole TalentMed team for providing this opportunity.

Content and training

A medical transcriptionist (also called a healthcare documentation specialist) listens to dictated audio recordings from doctors and other healthcare professionals, then converts them into accurate, structured written documents. These documents form part of the patient's medical record and are used across consultations, referrals, hospital admissions, and ongoing patient care.

The work requires a strong grasp of medical terminology, anatomy, healthcare workflows, and the formatting conventions used across different specialties. Modern transcription work more and more, involves editing draft documents produced by speech-recognition software, alongside straight transcription.

The course covers practical workflow tools used in real healthcare documentation work, including foot-pedal-operated audio playback, formatting in industry-standard document templates, and editing speech-recognised drafts. You'll also receive a 3-month free subscription to award-winning keyboard automation software, which experienced transcriptionists use to build professional speed and accuracy.

No. Where some providers require work placements, our course includes access to hundreds of authentic transcription reports across more than 32 medical specialties for you to practise on. The reports cover a realistic mix of consultation notes, referrals, operative notes, discharge summaries, and specialist correspondence.
TalentMed engages with industry stakeholders to keep our training and assessment materials aligned with current workplace needs and employer expectations.

Healthcare documentation work is computer-based, so you'll need:

  • A reliable personal computer (Windows, macOS, or Chrome OS) with a modern web browser
  • A word processor (Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Mac Pages, or LibreOffice)
  • A reliable internet connection
  • Headphones (a basic stereo headset is fine to start; many transcriptionists upgrade to professional headsets and foot pedals once working)

Most computers come with the software essentials already. The 3-month keyboard automation software subscription is included with your enrolment.

You can access our policies and procedures at any time on our dedicated policies page, or via the Policies link in our website's footer.

Career and professional development

As a registered training provider and not an employer, TalentMed is unable to guarantee work or job placements upon course completion. However, our diploma-level qualifications are listed on the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) and classified as nationally recognised training, which means the qualification is recognised by employers and other registered training organisations across Australia.

Our Guided Learner package includes personalised Job Search Assistance on completion of your course, with guidance on building a transcriptionist portfolio and approaching potential employers and clients.

Healthcare documentation is one of the few professional healthcare careers you can do entirely from home. Graduates work across a mix of employer and contractor arrangements:

  • Outsourced transcription companies servicing GP clinics, specialists, and allied health practices
  • Private medical practices, specialist clinics, and hospital records departments in in-house roles
  • Self-employed contractors building their own client base of practitioners

Many transcriptionists combine flexible part-time arrangements that fit around family or other commitments.

The role has changed but not disappeared. Speech-recognition software now handles a portion of the initial transcription, but the output requires careful editing for accuracy, formatting, and clinical correctness. The skills you learn in this course (medical terminology, healthcare documentation conventions, anatomy and physiology, editing transcripts to professional standards) are exactly the skills employers need to work alongside speech-recognition tools, not against them.

Additional information

This course is currently designed for delivery to Australian residents. If you have any questions or would like to see us offering this course in your country, let us know. You can get in touch via our website, email, or live chat.

As per standard VET assessment practice, the pre-training LLN assessment is administered once on entry. If you'd like to reattempt it, a minimum of three months is required between attempts to allow time for targeted LLN support to take effect and for meaningful improvement to be demonstrated.

The purpose of the LLN test is to assess whether you have the skills to succeed in a Diploma-level qualification. Allowing learners to re-sit repeatedly would not be a fair or valid process. Our goal is to provide targeted LLN support and give you enough time to improve your skills to the required level. This requirement is in place to protect your learning needs and to make sure the course is suitable for your success.

As the course is delivered online, you'll need a computer and an internet connection. Specifications:

Operating system

  • Microsoft Windows
  • macOS
  • Chrome OS

Software

  • A modern web browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari)
  • A word processor such as Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Mac Pages, or LibreOffice
  • A PDF reader

Most computers come with these already. If you're unsure about any of the requirements, please let us know. We're happy to discuss.
