When you think about medical transcription as a career, there’s not a lot of everyday experience to go off.
Because we don’t usually see or hear a medical transcriptionist (MT) working at a local hospital or medical clinic – the role of an MT is often misunderstood. Interestingly however, when we open a letter from a doctor, or read a medical report, there is a very high chance that a professional MT has transcribed it.
With more than twenty-three million people in Australia all requiring some level of healthcare, the medical records and documentation industry is certainly in-demand.
If you’re thinking about pursuing a career in medical transcription, you need to keep in mind that there are typically three main career pathways available:

Hi,
I am looking for another job that could supplement my income and believe this might just be what I am looking for. Do you provide RPL because I am a Case Manager for the elderly and was previously employed as an Endorsed Enrolled Nurse.
Regards,
Steffie

Hi Andrea,
Thank you for your comment.
It’s great to hear that you’ve had so much experience in the MT industry. There are many career choices for our graduates. Once you complete the course, your Graduate Support team will provide you with extensive job search assistance. This includes personalised advice on your resume, job hunt and application process. Please note however, TalentMed is unable to guarantee any positions as a registered training organisation and not an employer directly. Having said that, through our network of associated Recruitment Partners, we have been able to help place a high number of graduates into these positions upon course completion.
As you may already be aware, each MT position is paid differently and work-from-home MT’s are generally paid on a production basis. For more information please feel free to give us a call on 03 9937 1599
I’ve been in the MT industry for almost 5 years. This is not to discourage, but for those who plans to start a career in MT and is looking for training, get those that guarantees a job after graduation. It will be really tough for you to find a job alone, these days. Medical transcription has obviously changed a lot in the previous years. Now, many companies use voice recognition instead and MTs are just editing the files causing a reduction on their pay, sometimes as low as 3 cents per line.
Hi Jennifer,
Thank you for your comment – It’s great to hear that you have a background in Medical Transcription. Medical Transcription has certainly evolved with technology recently and now allows MTs to take on more of an editing role. Instead of MTs transcribing every word of the doctor’s dictations, they play an important role in ensuring that the transcription is accurate by editing the reports. Critical thinking is a unique human ability that cannot be imitated by voice recognition technology and it is for this reason that MTs remain an important part of the Medical Industry.
